Favorite Finds Friday {18}

Hi everyone! Megan here. Is it just me or did this week go by super fast? Probably just me. I've been working on designing a new look for the blog to give it our own unique look. It's been pretty fun, but it's not easy work for a novice like myself. And on top of all that I've been sick. Just a little cold that's not too bad, but I've given it to Alex. He takes a little cold to a whole new level. A little cold makes him believe he's dying of the Spanish flu and all sense of doing things for himself goes completely out the window. He requested soup for dinner last night, because his few sneezes have him convinced he's on death's door. When he goes into these little episodes I just make him the darn soup. But, I know what's really going on. Madden 13 football game came out this week and it wasn't at all what he expected. He's been moping about it since Tuesday. And I feel bad for him. He's been waiting all year for it. So I made him some broccoli cheddar soup. He loved it. I wasn't really that impressed. I think I may have added too much broccoli, but I'm getting off track here.

It was new recipe. New recipes mean extra dirty dishes, at least to me anyway.

How often does this happen to you? It happens to me ALL the time! And it's always the pots. The worst or worst when it comes to washing dishes. Anyway, on to this week's favorite finds.

Thirsty Thursday - Butterbeer

Hey everybody! It's that time again for Thirsty Thursday. I'm so glad we decided to start doing these. As you may or may not know, I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. I grew up reading the books and love watching the movies. This week I'm going to show y'all how to make homemade Butterbeer. It's a popular wizarding beverage served in Hogsmeade.

DIY End Table From Old Books

Hi everyone! Megan here! The end of July marked my good friend Teresa's 30th birthday. I wanted to make her birthday extra special, so I did two things. One was to make her the birthday cake she requested. I helped with ideas for her party on Pintrest and we came across this cute little cake.

Teresa immediately expressed interest in this cake and asked me if I would bake this for her. Of course I agreed. But, I also told her that her cake probably wouldn't be an exact replica of the aforementioned cake.

 Here is Teresa's cake in the process of being frosted. At this point, I was 99% sure it was gonna to be a disaster. The layers didn't come out anywhere near a thick as I wanted them too, but when I started making this cake it was the day before Teresa's party. Way to late to start over.

Thirsty Thursday - Pomegranate Ginger Spritzer

Happy Thirsty Thursday everyone! If you didn't catch the memo last week we have changed things up a little bit. We will do Tutorial Tuesdays, Wordless Wednesdays, and Thirsty Thursdays, and keep your eyes peeled because we have a lot of things planned for the blog.

This week I made Pomegranate Ginger Spritzer. NO! It does not have alcohol in it. First thing my husband said when I brought him a drink "but I don't drink" as if I forgot being his wife. The original recipe which I am posting did not make anywhere near as much as I thought. It would be a good amount if your whipping it up to have with dinner, but if you were going to entertain I would double, or even triple the amounts.

Thirsty Thursday - Minted Sweet Tea

UPDATE: This post was featured on

Photobucket

Hey everyone, Megan here! Welcome to Thirsty Thursday! Emily mentioned in our last blog post that last week us girls had our girl's night out. We discussed the blog and threw around a few ideas to bring some fresh new content to you guys. Thirsty Thursday was one of those ideas. I decided to take the first Thirsty Thursday because while we out we went to a local restaurant in Savannah called the Toucan Cafe.  This restaurant is a remodeled house and the food is really good but the place definitely needs a paint job. Anyway, they have the most amazing minted sweet tea ever. Me, being the southern girl I am, I just had to make a copy cat. So, presenting Thirsty Thursday's first drink ever...

Refreshing and tasty!

Ingredients:

6-8 tea bags ( I use one family sized tea bag)
1 pitcher full of water
1 cup chopped mint
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar

Directions:

1. Pour your pitcher of water into a large pot and heat to boiling.

2. Turn of heat and place your tea bags into the water. Let steep for 10 minutes, covered.

3. Meanwhile, place your 1/2 cup water, sugar, and mint in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil on a medium-high heat. Once the syrup is boiling and all the sugar has dissolved, removed from heat and let cool.

4. Pour your tea into your pitcher and place a strainer over the top of the pitcher. Pour in the syrup straining the mint leaves out of the syrup mixture. Stir.

BAM! Minted sweet tea. If it's not minty enough for you add more mint. Not sweet enough? Add more sugar. And that's this week's addition of Thirsty Thursday! See you guys tomorrow for Favorite Finds Friday.

Ceiling Fan Redo

Happy Tuesday everybody! What... huh? A tutorial posting on a Tuesday? Yes it's true! Melissa Megan and I went out for a girls night last Friday and we decided that we want to start posting more and chose to do Tutorial Tuesday and drum roll please.... Thirsty Thursday!

On to today's posting.. We are in the process of redo-ing Scarlett's room. In a 112 year old house it's a process, a lengthy process. You never know what you are going to find behind the walls, it's like Christmas if Santa had a very bad sense of humor. I hate the look of plain white fans, but we didn't want to put out a lot of money for a child's room, at least just yet, so I used scrapbook paper to update her fan into something totally unique.

Favorite Finds Friday {15}

AH! We made it to Friday. I thought it would never come. So, this week we are going to start incorporating Melissa's favorite finds. We are super excited to have her join us. We here at Whimsically Homemade are a tight group of friends and we enjoy the time we spend together. Being as close as we are, we able to depend on each other, confide in each other, and in this case laugh at each other. I found this shifting through the millions of pins I go through almost daily on Pintrest. It immediately made me think of Emily.

DIY Cake Stand

So, we got some good stuff that's going to be going on within the next couple of months. We'll be promoting some nice giveaways so everyone stayed tuned. Today however, nothing too exciting. Just gonna walk you through how to make your own cake stand.

Granted, this is a poorly crafted cake plate. The plate and the planting pot I used are completely disproportional. But I used what I had. I know that I'm gonna attempt this again a little later down the road when I have something more appropriate. Until then....

Introducing Melissa!

Hey everybody! Megan and I are super excited because we have asked our good friend Melissa to become a regular poster to the blog.(See Melissa's Cheesy Chicken for her first post!) She will be involved in all aspects of the blog now, from postings to favorite finds and facebook.

Melissa is originally from Watertown NY and moved to Savannah in 2010. She has always enjoyed crafts and DIY. She like Megan and I works full time, however she does not work with us (sad face). She works at a haunted house down town, but half her work time is from home where she has a lot of extra time to work on her projects.

Melissa is really excited to share her ideas with y'all and we are super excited to have her on board.

Favorite Finds Friday {14}

Yay! No Favorite Finds last week? Yeah, that's my bad. Last weekend was my very good friend Teresa's birthday party. I had to put the finishing touches on her cake. (I'll be sharing that later on.)  It took me a lot longer than expected and then I was exhausted so I took a nap then I had to get down the to beach where her party was. Before I knew it, it was Monday and I was still exhausted. I've done two cakes in the last week and those take so much work, they tire me out quick. The weekend before Emily and I worked on a birthday cake for one of our co-workers. He wanted a vanilla on vanilla cake. How boring is that? So me and Emily, being the show offs that we are, were able to find out his favorite candy. We've made cakes before based off of candy. Like the almond joy cake below.
